The owners of the Sahara hotel-casino on the Las Vegas
Strip, which closed this year after 59 years, will donate one
of its iconic signs to the Neon Museum, a collection of Sin
City's most well-known historic markers.
The sign is considered a classic example of Las Vegas'
past and the historic art form of neon signs, and will
join other old signs at the museum including the Moulin
Rouge, the city's first racially integrated casino, and Binion's
The Neon Museum consists of three components: the
Boneyard, the Fremont St Gallery, and the Neon Signs
Project. The Boneyard holds more than 100 donated and
rescued signs from the late 1930s through the early '90s,
the Fremont Street Gallery displays restored signs along
Fremont and Third streets, and the Neon Signs Project has
restored signs on Las Vegas Blvd.
The Sahara opened in 1952 and was well-known for its
lounges and A-list celebrities. The Beatles stayed there and
Louis Prima and Don Rickles were fixtures of the casino's
entertainment. The showroom hosted Sonny and Cher and
Judy Garland, and the casino was featured in the Rat Pack-
era film Ocean's Eleven.
