Home' Hunter Its People : Hunter Our Backyard June 2011 Contents Foreword
By the Honourable Julia Gillard, MP,
Prime Minister of Australia
IT is my great pleasure to provide this
message because I've travelled to the Hunter
region countless times and it is a part of
Australia I love very much.
Lieutenant John Shortland stumbled across
what became Newcastle and the Hunter River
while searching for escaped convicts in 1797,
seeing the rich and beautiful countryside
that its indigenous custodians had known for
This ended up being a very fortunate
''accident'' because from it grew one of
Australia's greatest cities and regions, which
has contributed so mightily to our nation's
The Hunter's unique history has seen it
become a leader in industries such as steel-
making, heavy engineering and coal - a heritage
of which every Australian should be very proud.
But the Hunter's ingenuity and resilience
has seen it also seize the opportunities that
come with change, moving into new fields such
as avionics, tourism, fine food and wine, clean
energy, the arts and education - the very fields
on which so much of Australia's future relies.
Today the Hunter region offers a lifestyle
that is second to none, with diverse landscapes
ranging from the majestic Wollemi National
Park to magnificent beaches and coastal lakes,
and the world-renowned wine-growing district.
It is easy to see why so many domestic and
international visitors make their way here
annually, and why so many Australians choose
to call this place home.
As a firm friend of the Hunter community, I
thank the Newcastle Herald for making this
magazine possible because it celebrates a
magnificent region whose achievements over
200 years will only be exceeded by even greater
things in the future.
