DOING business without advertising is like winking
at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing,
but nobody else does.
So said famed marketer and advertising executive
Steuart Henderson Britt as an explanation for the need to
In 2010 we are in what has been described as the age of
advertising, when the art of getting a message to the public
has risen to a level unprecedented in the history of man.
So, in the Hunter, who would be the top 12 faces of the
region who could be used to sell a product? Who would be
able to inspire the public to desire and belief?
That was the question put to Lisa Sutton Gardner and
her team at Enigma Communication, Australia's largest
regional communications agency, with her mission, should
she accept it (and she did) to come up with a dream team
that the people of the Hunter would trust and be willing to
They would have to be people with skill and drive, with
proven abilities in their own areas of expertise. They would
have to be known and respected, and preferably liked by
Gardner has come up with a team that she says is
interesting ''to say the least''.
''I think the potential client or buyer would like the
dynamic this team would bring to the table,'' she says. ''All
of them are fighters, spirited, considered, leaders, highly
respected, have taken the road less travelled, would put
their money where their mouth is and on top of all that
have worked bloody hard to get where they are today. All
of them are still incredibly active in their chosen field of
expertise and have lots more to give in the future. I feel in
most cases they are just warming up.
''One of the biggest factors in choosing this team ...
is they would have to have larger than life personalities
and be absolutely trustworthy in reputation. I'm a huge
believer that if you can show a potential client/customer
that you are passionate, hardworking, committed,
trustworthy and innovative, and will put your money
where your mouth is, then you have a very good chance of
winning the business.
''Clients have to work with you every day, and they want
to do business with people they like, respect and, most
Gardner says all the people in the dream team are strong
independent thinkers, have not always won - ''perhaps have
lost more times than they have won to be honest'' - but get
up every day and try again, ''and for that they win.''
The team has been doing what they do for a long time,
consistently, in one role or other.
''I feel this team achieves a mix of experienced, long-
term and worldlier thinkers coupled with a raw, new,
alternate and fresh approaches to balance out,'' she says.
She feels the team has balance. ''I spent most of my time
in preparing this list, just looking at the different people
and how they operate through personal knowledge, using
articles I have read about them and then by talking to
my senior team at Enigma to get a feel on how this team
would gel. All of them come from completely different
backgrounds, would have completely different levels
of education and leadership methods -- though are all
successful in their own way.
''All of the members of this team have enough spunk
and are loud enough to state the most important question,
and not a lot of people can do this, and that is 'to ask
for the business'. On top of that there is enough smarts
for this team to sit around as a team and strategize the
economic outcomes on both a creative and commercial
front to ensure they get the right outcome.''
Here is the Enigma dream team, its most desireable
